Memeriksa validitas tanggal lahir

(level:beginner)

10 Design Tips on Your Blog

1. Use a decent theme.

Don’t use the theme that came pre-installed with the blog. Search for a better theme. Or at least change the header! If your blog looks like thousands of other blogs, nobody will remember it. Readers have a short attention span. I’ve already forgotten what I was talking about.

2. Don’t use a dark background.

This is likely to be determined by the theme you use, but I strongly recommend that you only use black text on a white background, or a light background. A black background with white text can be very hard on the eyes.

If you want to use a background image, make sure your content is readable. You could put a simple background image around the edge of your site and display the content on a light background. Whatever you do, don’t use a photograph and put the text directly on top of it. This does not look good, even if it’s a great photo. You don’t write on a photo.

3. Keep ads and widgets to a minimum.

I have seen so many blogs with ads, widgets, games, awards and other assorted junk cluttering up their sidebars. It looks messy, and it slows everything down.

Don’t add “just one more widget” because someone wrote about it, or because other blogger have loads of widgets. Many widgets serve no purpose whatsoever and just get in the way. If you want to try a few things out, try to limit yourself to a couple of new items at a time - don’t just add everything you can find.

4. Content should be the main focus.

Aside from keeping ads and widgets to a minimum, any bits and pieces you do put on your blog should not draw attention away from your content. Surrounding your posts is not a good idea. Make it easy for readers to find the content of your posts - don’t make them hunt around.

5. Don’t make the text too small.

Some “designers” think it’s “cool” to use ridiculously small text, with the excuse that you can always increase the size in your browser. This is crazy. Use a respectable font size as your default - don’t make your readers push their noses right up the screen to read your posts. It just leaves noseprints on the screen.

6. Use colours to distinguish between navigation and content.

Many blogs have one or two sidebars alongside the content, sometimes with a horizontal navigation bar across the top as well. It helps to use a subtle background colour for your navigation areas so it’s clear where the content starts and ends.

I have actually seen sites that blend the whole lot together, which causes a big problem when reading - some of the lines within each post actually run into the navigation links!

7. Beware of scrolling.

Except for a few special cases, most sites should not have a horizontal scroll bar. The content runs from top to bottom, you expect to scroll down to read a long post, but you don’t want to scroll across the read the end of each line.

Even vertical scrolling can get annoying if it’s excessive. Don’t put too many posts on your front page, especially if you want to display the full text of each post.

8. Avoid animated images, marquees, and blinking text.

At best, these are a minor distraction that just gets ignored. At worst, your readers won’t be able to concentrate on reading your content. Avoid them, or you might have readers who spend more time watching the animations than reading your posts.

9. Keep everything neat.

Some sites don’t make very good use of the available space. It seems like even a tiny box has huge spaces above and below it. The FeedBurner “subscribe by email” box is a good example of this.

Changing the default code is a good way to tidy things up a bit. Neat and tidy!

10. Give your site an identity.

A logo, an icon, a photo of you, there are a few ways to give your site its own identity. Even if you use an existing theme, you can modify it to make it your own. This will help with establishing your site.

Do you agree with these tips? What other design tips can you think of that are important to bloggers?

10 reasons to slow down your post frequency

Some blogger suggest to writing a new post every single day. Others write even more than that. I think it’s better to write every couple of days. Here are 10 reasons why posting too frequently is not a good idea for most blogs.

1. It lessens the impact of your best posts.

If you’ve just spent great time to construct a really great perfect post, keeping it at the top of your front page will draw attention to it.

But if you write another post too soon after the last, the impact of that really good post may decrease. Subscribed readers may read all your post, but new readers will usually see the latest post first.

Don’t be trigger-happy with your next post if you just put up something great. Leave it up for a bit. It works well on me.

2. Readers may feel overwhelmed.

Some blogs just post too much, too often. Even if the content is always really good, you may overwhelm your readers if you post too often.

If you specialize in shorter posts, or you have a lot of readers, you may be able to get away with this. Just don’t start with a lot of posts. Take your time.

3. Posts take time to gather comments.

I’ve experimented with a few different posting frequencies. When writing a new post every single day, I found the posts received fewer comments.

Writing every couple of days gives readers the opportunity to read the post and comment on it before the next post goes up. Of course, not everyone reads the posts immediately, but you’ve got to give them some breathing room.

4. A greater risk of blogger burnout.

If you’re not used to blogging and you start out by posting far too often, you may burn out before you even get to the end of your first month.

Whether it’s due to a lack of writing energy, a lack of ideas or a bit of both, racing ahead with your posts is a great risk to your blog if you’re not used to writing.

5. Quantity may become the most important thing.

If you’ve been writing 2 posts every day for a few months, you may feel that you owe it to your blog to keep that rhythm going. Well, maybe you do… but what if you try to write on days when you don’t really want to? The quality will suffer.

Establish a posting rhythm that you can sustain, not one that other people recommend and that simply doesn’t work for you. If you’re having problems, try a different schedule.

6. Sometimes it’s better to keep a stock of posts.

Bulk writing is a handy way to “stock up” on posts at times when you’re keen to write. You can then publish them over a few days or weeks, perhaps saving some for days when you “need” a post but you don’t particularly want to write on that day.

Saving up posts can save you in the future. If you write lots of posts in quick succession, resist the urge to publish them too quickly - even if they’re really good! (Which, of course, they should be).

7. Proof-reading can suffer.

If you’re working to a tight schedule with lots of posts being published each week, you may find yourself skipping the task of proof-reading your posts. Here’s a tip: slow down, check your posts make sense and you’ve corrected any errors, and publish them gradually.

8. Sleep on it, and you may get new ideas.

On Monday you wrote a good post. You’re buzzing and want to publish another post on Tuesday. Instead of racing ahead, give the Monday post another day to gather comments, then spend some time planning your next post.

Spending that extra time could lead you to a great follow-up post, or a spin-off post based on what you last wrote. Don’t be impatient!

9. Last-minute posts stand a chance.

If you’re posting too frequently, you may find there isn’t much room to slot additional posts into your schedule. Sometimes you’ll want to write a post quickly and get it online as soon as possible - that’s going to be difficult if you overbook yourself.

Try to leave a little room between your posts if you can!

10. You may end up talking to yourself.

OK, so if you insist on posting too frequently, you may have less comments and less subscribers. Slowly but surely you’ll feel like you’re talking to yourself, thereby harming your motivation and potentially making you question if you should continue blogging.

Don’t do this! Save yourself! Slow down, pace yourself, and you may find that things start to fall into place.

So, what do you think? How often do you publish new posts? Do you think you post too quickly?

10 tips to incoming more comments

1. Put your best arguments first (On post body).

If you start every post with “Today I’m going to write about… ” - that’s not the best way to draw people in. Kick off with a point that makes people go “Great point!” or “Terrible point!”

Avoid mediocrity or blandness. Make the words jump out at you, right off the page and onto the floor. Don’t forget to pick them up and put them back on the page before you publish the post, though.

2. Then your 2nd best arguments last, great!

OK, you have a great opening… but the post doesn’t end well. “So, that’s what I think of this. How about you?” No no no… don’t do what I do. You can do better than that.

First, you grab the reader’s attention, next you make them read the detail of your post, and finally you have to give them a good point to go out on - but leave them wanting more. Otherwise, they’ll be underwhelmed, and your post will be just another one that doesn’t get many comments.

3. Write only what you really know.

There’s not much point writing on things you know nothing about. “Hi, I’m not a sports fan, but did you see the game last night?”

The subjects also need to be relevant to your blog, familiar to your existing readers, and familiar with potential new readers. But not so familiar that they take one look and say “Heard it” before moving on.

You want to write what YOU know, but what the reader doesn’t know they know. If that makes sense.

4. Use a great title.

“KAPOW!” Great title. A much better one distills the meaning of your post into just a few words. “Google PageRank update” - who cares? “PageRank: what Google never told you” - a bit better. “How to boost PageRank and influence people” - perfect! Well, it’s not bad.

As with the opening line of your post, the title should jump out and make you want to read more. For instance, if you’re going to do “Wordless Wednesday”, can you do it without using that as the title? Get creative. Otherwise, you’re just… not very creative.

5. Don’t generalise - name names.

Good examples:

Bad examples:

  • Someone wrote a post about something.
  • Someone changed their image.
  • Someone has a blog.
  • Someone.

6. Then again - don’t name names.

Be gentle, let people know it’s them you’re referring to, but don’t name them! They might comment to say “hey that’s me!”

Examples are the same as for #5 - just swap the “good” and “bad” around. Maybe avoid the “Someone” example though. That’s not coy. It’s just silly, got it!

7. Captivate the reader.

Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Banana Blah Blah Blah Bleh Blah Blah Blargh Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah nana Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah.

Really, who wants to read a dull post? Would you go back and read it again? If the answer’s no - it might be time to rethink your writing style. Bad style never comes into fashion.

8. Reply to comments with new questions.

OK, so you’ve got a comment or two. Why not start a discussion by adding a comment with some further thoughts? This can get people to keep coming back to your posts. Failing that, you’ll look silly as you’re always the last one to leave a comment, but at least you tried!

9. Reply in a new post.

Replying to comments is good, but replying in a new post is much more visible. Did someone just give you an idea for a new post? Use it!

10. Ask questions at the end of the post.

What do you think would happen if the Internet stopped working for 24 hours? Why don’t you help me get more comments on this post than any of my others? Tell me when… will I see you again?

Or, ask questions that are actually relevant to the post…

Have you apply that? It works as well, doesn't it?

10 kind of post you shouldn't write

1. Under construction post.

This blog is currently under construction. I haven’t figured out why I started it, I just did it because I can. I don’t know how long it’ll be before I have time to write some posts. Thanks for visiting!

Arr… yeah. Why did you start a blog again? `1To talk to yourself? If you don’t want other people to read it, why is it a public blog? If you do want other people to read it, don’t start the blog until you know what you’re doing with it.

2. Out of topic post.

Hey folks, I’m sick of writing about the stuff you subscribed for, so instead I’m going to write about stuff that’s totally unrelated. And who knows, I may get so sick of the normal posts that I only write one off-topic post every week. But it’s my blog, and I’ll do what I like!

Look, you’ve got to write what you know and like, or blogging will become a chore. But if it isn’t working out, reassess your priorities. Maybe an occasional off-topic post is acceptable, but when a good blog becomes interspersed with irrelevant posts, it’s a major turn-off.

3. Blank blogger.

I have no posts lined up for today, so I’m going to have a big old ramble about nothing. Blogging needs to be raw, original and personal, so I think this is OK.

There’s such a thing as too much honesty. You should plan ahead to make sure that you have several post ideas or even entire posts written ahead of time. If you really run out of ideas, perhaps revisit an older post, ask for post suggestions on Twitter maybe , read some other blogs, write a guest post, or take a break at all huh!

4. Link love.

This week I’m going to link to a bunch of posts you’ve either already read or don’t care about. And I’ll do the same next week. And the week after. Failing that, I’ll just link to some random posts from people I like, not because their posts are relevant to you, dear readers, but because they’re my friends. When you’re done reading, why not give a little link love of your own?

No, no, NO. Linking to other sites is good, but you should work it into your existing posts. A post that is nothing more than a bunch of links to other sites is not much use unless you include thoughtful, relevant links and give readers a reason to click them. Linking for the sake of it just isn’t a good idea.

5. Round-up posts (Circling in that way).

I wrote 5 posts this week, here are links to all of them. I like this one, but that one could have been better. Next week, I might only have time to write 1 post, but I’ll do a round-up post anyway just because it wouldn’t be a week at my blog without a round-up post.

I used to do round-up posts, but stopped after a few weeks. They felt like a school assignment, where you have to write “In this essay I will be talking about X. Here are my arguments for and against X. That was my essay about X”. Sometimes you don’t need quite so much structure and fluff. Some things speak for themselves. Maybe a monthly round-up isn’t too bad, but don’t just say “I did this, I did that” - make it GOOD.

6. My stats just went up.

This week, I hit a new high of 50 subscribers and my posts received an average of 5 comments each. Thanks everyone! Let’s beat those stats next week!

I love stats, but most of the time I prefer to keep them to myself. Stats are good to see how you’re doing, but they’re difficult to influence. For instance, even if you pull out all the stops, you might find it very hard to boost the number of people who subscribe to your site. People tend to set goals they know they can achieve, or that they can’t actually control but that they’d probably achieve even if they didn’t set any goals. Instead of writing about your stats, spend more time writing on-topic posts that give value to your readers.

7. Just a quick video from YouTube.

Check out this funny video!

What does this have to do with anything? If we really wanted to see videos, we’d be ON YouTube already. If you’re sharing a video that’s relevant, don’t write a cop-out post along the lines of, “You really have to watch the video, I’m not going to comment on it - everything that needs to be said is said in the video“. If it’s your video, give an introduction and possibly provide a text equivalent for those people who can’t or won’t watch the video right now. If it’s not your video, add some of your own views.

8. I found a new cool site.

WOW. Facebook/MySpace/Friendster (etc) is so COOL. Go sign up now!

Why write about this cool site if you can’t tell me anything about it? Give me a reason to check it out, and I might. Too many sites want me to sign up, I can’t sign up at all of them.

9. New version of WordPress.

(Insert exact copy of official WordPress announcement here)

My Dashboard tells me there’s a new version of WordPress. Do I really need to see this on every blog I visit?

10. Lists of posts you shouldn’t write.

Yeah, who needs those silly posts that just moan and groan about everyone else’s mistakes without offering any real suggestions for writing a good blog…
